There are two basic etching techniques, surface etching and carving, and a third texturing technique know as Gluechipping.
Surface Etching
Surface etching a desired pattern onto glass is accomplished by blasting an abrasive material uniformly over the surface of the glass. The glass maintains its flat surface while your chosen design is permanently affixed. Surface etching can be accomplished in two ways. The glass can be etched or it can be reverse-etched. On an etched glass, the design is etched and the background is left clear. On a reverse-etched glass the background is etched and the design is left clear.
Carving
Carving a desired pattern into glass requires thicker glass and is a more labor-intensive process; it involves blasting with an abrasive material also, but to various depths into the glass to achieve layering and perspective.
Completed etched areas of glass in both surface etching and carving appear frosted. In addition to these two basic techniques, a complimentary technique know as shading can be employed to accent surface etching or carving or a combination of the two
Gluechipping Gluechipping is a process used to create swirling textured patterns which render the glass clear yet, translucent. It also can be used in combination with surface etching and/or carving.

What types of designs are available?

Prepared stencil design
A prepared stencil design can be selected from one of many patterns available in our design books, from which you can select the one to suit your personal taste. This approach does not involve fees for design and art work. Free consultation service is offered in helping you to select the pattern best suited to your need. The cost of the surface etching technique alone is $65.00 per square foot plus the cost of the type of glass you choose. To surface-etch a window or door glass that is 2 X 3 , the total cost would be $390.00, plus tax. When a combination of techniques are involved, the square foot cost is affected by additional techniques involved and the complexity of the design, plus the cost of the type of glass you choose. The cost of carving a similar design can range from $120.00 to $150.00 per hour.
Custom design
Custom design etching is the creation of a unique design pattern created especially to your specifications. This process includes private consultation, art work and, sometimes, a mechanically prepared stencil before it can be etched onto the glass, to provide you with the sharpest quality product. Based upon the complexity of your design, the surface etching cost for this service can range from $65.00 - $100.00 per hour.
The carving cost can range from $120.00 to $150.00 per hour.
A deposit of 50% is required on all orders. This deposit is non-refundable once work has begun.

How does the consultation process work?

For prepared stencil design selection, Etchit Glass for Living invites you to visit our studio and allow us to help you select a design to serve both your objective (such as privacy) and your taste.
For custom design an initial visit to your home is required for the artist to view the surroundings that the design is intended to compliment.

How long will it take to receive my piece?

Most stencils must be factory ordered to your specific size, which can take from one to two weeks for delivery. Depending upon the technique(s) used, the process specified and the complexity of your design, the etching process can take from one to three additional weeks.

Does your company provide installation?

We are able to etch most windows and doors that are already set within the framework. We do not provide installation service of glass cut for a specific use.

Do you deliver?

We are happy to deliver standard size etched glass free of charge within the Baton Rouge city limits. There is a service fee for delivery of over-sized pieces or delivery outside of the city limits.

What is the cost of design work?
